Admission Requirements

To apply for the ULCHS PhD program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Candidates should be affiliated with one of the RETAIN partners.

  • Applicants must hold a master’s degree in basic or biomedical sciences and/or public health, with a minimum GPA of 3.00.

  • Once admission is open, the application link will be available here

  • All required documents should be uploaded online as PDF or Microsoft documents in the following format: your first_last name followed by the type of document (e.g., Klubo_Kpelle_Letter of Recommendation work_MOH). 

    • A curriculum vitae (no more than three pages) with three references (at least one professional/work and one academic).

    • Unofficial transcripts for bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

    • Three letters of recommendation, ONLY a mix of at least one from a professional colleague and academic reference.

    • A research concept summarizing the applicant’s proposed research focus that should be 3-4 pages.

    • Personal statement/motivation letter explaining your goals and interest in the program that should align with your research concept Should be 1-2 pages.

NOTE: If needed, please seek online and professional assistance to develop the research concept and personal statements because they are heavily weighted as part of determining your suitability

  • Technical and Skill Requirements:

    • Must have a laptop.

    • Proficiency in MS Office and basic computer/organizational skills.

  • Additional Requirements:

    • Submit an honor statement on academic integrity.

    • Complete a computer skills assessment.

    • Participate in an in-person interview with the selection committee.

Duration & Fees

Each PhD program has a duration of 4 years minimum and 8 years maximum, allowing students the flexibility to complete their research and academic requirements at a pace that suits their individual needs. The cost of each program is $3,000 per semester.

RETAIN Partnership & ULCHS PhD Program

The University of Liberia (UL) College of Health Sciences (CHS) is collaborating with RETAIN to strengthen Liberia's scientific research capacity. This partnership involves multiple stakeholders, including PREVAIL, the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), the Ministry of Health, and other prominent Liberian organizations.
