Excellence in Science Education for Liberia - Camp xSEL

Every year, July 29th, 30th, and August 29th have witnessed a wave of emotions overwhelming the campuses hosting Liberia’s biggest and most anticipated event in science education—Camp xSEL. As campers from the country’s fifteen counties arrive, the air fills with smiles, laughter, and countless hugs. Departures are marked by many teary moments, often leaving camp staff and campers with watery eyes. These moments, brimming with joy, excitement, and a touch of sadness, embody the essence of Camp xSEL: a place where campers, instructors, and staff come together, united by the shared dream of shaping Liberia’s future. Here, young minds aspire to become the next generation of highly trained midwives, doctors, nurses, microbiologists, and much more.

Smiles, Laughter, Hugs, and Tears:

The Heartbeat of

Camp xSEL

The anticipation of arrival is palpable. "Camp xSEL has started!" the campers chant, their voices echoing across the campus. "Young scholars are arriving! We come from every region; some rode, and [in past years] some flew in. We are perfectly contented, that’s why we are dancing!" This song of hope and unity underscores their excitement for the month ahead—a month that promises not only academic enlightenment but also the forging of new friendships and unbreakable bonds.

As my team and I capture these moments, I find myself filled with hope and joy for my country. I see in these campers the wonderful future being built for Liberia, and my love for this land is renewed. This year, as Camp xSEL 2024 unfolds, my team at BRIDGE-U: Liberia Communications has grown from a humble two-person crew to a dynamic five-member force. We meticulously planned how we would capture the camp's activities, create

daily routines, and manage social media posts. But nothing truly prepares you for the magic of Camp xSEL. Here, science campers reveal extraordinary artistic talents, and despite the varying ages of the campers, each discussion crackles with enthusiasm. Their eagerness to learn and their sparkling curiosity are infectious, a testament to the boundless potential of Liberia.

These campers, hailing from diverse regions, are living proof that Liberia is a land of immense promise. Despite the challenges of unequal resource allocation and limited exposure in rural counties, they shine brightly, filled with hope and determination. We have witnessed fierce academic competitions, debates and quizzes, where the performances of both male and female campers are nothing short of extraordinary. In Maryland, for instance, the female campers have consistently outshone their male counterparts, demonstrating a powerful and inspiring strength. Class participation at both the Montserrado and Maryland camps has been invaluable, sparking thought-provoking discussions that probe for clarity and truth, embodying the true spirit of scientific inquiry. These campers arrive with their A-game, ready to challenge themselves and each other.

One of the camp’s greatest joys is its instructional staff. Professors from the University of Liberia and Tubman University work side by side with co-instructors who are high school teachers. Many campers have expressed their surprise and delight at how these educators adapt their lessons to a camper-friendly level, making even the most complex concepts accessible. In both camps, classroom teaching is infused with love, laughter, and joy. The professors and co-instructors are more than just educators, they are mentors, role models, and sources of inspiration.

As the days unfold, we see more than just academic growth. We see the emergence of future leaders, thinkers, and innovators. Camp xSEL is not just a camp; it is a movement—a beacon of hope for Liberia’s future. It is where dreams are nurtured, where potential is realized, and where the seeds of change are sown. And so, as I walk through the camp, capturing these moments, I am filled with an overwhelming sense of pride. I see a bright future for Liberia in the eyes of these young scholars, and I know that this is just the beginning. Camp xSEL is more than a program; it is a promise—a promise that Liberia’s future is in good hands.

Camp xSEL Maryland:

A Step Toward Expanding Opportunity in the Southeast

The Camp xSEL management team poses for a picture after a long day of preparing for the 2024 camps in Maryland and Montserrado Counties.

The vision of Camp xSEL is to create a student-centered, welcoming learning environment that empowers secondary school students to feel more confident in their education while inspiring and preparing them for careers in the health sciences. Every year, Camp xSEL strives to equip students with essential soft skills like confidence, communication, teamwork, and friendship. Additionally, the program focuses on improving the readiness of students for higher education in the health sciences while enhancing the pedagogical skills of university and high school teachers.

For the past three years, Camp xSEL has hosted 100 students annually from all 15 counties across the country. Twenty of these students come from the Southeast, a region known for its challenging geography, particularly during the rainy season. Roads become impassable, and the journey to camp becomes both difficult and expensive. In order to overcome these transportation barriers, the camp organizers have had to fly students from the Southeast to the main camp in Montserrado. This sparked a conversation among the camp's management. The Southeast, often considered a forgotten region, had a relatively low number of participants each year. Could there be a way to decentralize the camp, making it more accessible for students and teachers in this part of the country? The answer came in the form of a satellite camp, established in the heart of the Southeast, in Maryland County, at Tubman University (TU). The decentralization wasn't just about reducing travel costs and overcoming logistical challenges; it was also about leaving a lasting impact. By training teachers from the Southeast, the camp hoped to create a ripple effect that would benefit countless students once these teachers returned to their classrooms with newly gained pedagogical skills. The goal was to inspire more teachers to adopt student-centered, hands-on teaching methods that would extend beyond Camp xSEL and reach students in their local schools. In 2023, in preparation for this new endeavor, Camp xSEL management partnered with Tubman University. A training session was held on the university's campus, bringing together 22 instructors from the Southeast, 10 from counties including Maryland, Grand Kru, Grand Gedeh, River Gee, and Sinoe, and 12 professors/instructors from Tubman University itself. Additionally, four instructors were invited to Montserrado to participate in the main camp and observe how the program was run. By July 30, 2024, the Maryland camp was officially launched. The inaugural Southeast Camp xSEL welcomed 30 students, 11 instructors from Tubman University and surrounding counties, 2 counselors, 1 head counselor, 1 camp nurse, and 4 camp management staff. The campers stayed in the dormitories on the TU campus, alongside the Southeast instructors. Camp management staff were accommodated in the university’s guest house. Thanks to the support of TU staff, the campers had access to smart classrooms, laboratories, and a specially designated space for conducting science experiments. The local community’s enthusiasm for the camp was profound. Citizens of Maryland County were eager to learn more about the camp, and the participation of the medical staff from JJ Dossen Memorial Hospital was exceptional. The establishment of this satellite camp has already shown promise, with the number of campers from the Southeast increasing. The hope is that instructors will carry forward the lessons learned from Camp xSEL, bringing new teaching methods and inspiration to their students when they return home. One teacher shared their experience: “Camp xSEL has taught me that you don’t need a fancy laboratory or expensive materials to conduct a successful lab activity” _ Simon Nymah, Lab Instructor, Maryland Camp This newfound confidence in resourcefulness will undoubtedly benefit countless students in rural areas with limited resources. A camper from Maryland County, initially reluctant to attend, expressed a similar sentiment: “When I heard we were having another camp in Maryland, I didn’t want to attend. But now that I’m here, it doesn’t even feel like I’m in Maryland.”- Michael Jurry, 12th Grader, Maryland Camp The decentralization of Camp xSEL marks an exciting new chapter for the program, and with continued support, the Southeast camp could become a permanent fixture. As more teachers and students benefit from the camp’s unique learning environment, the impact will ripple across the entire region, empowering future generations to pursue careers in health sciences and embrace lifelong learning.

My Camp xSEL Experience

Attending the camp was an incredible experience that I’ll always remember. It was great to see so many young people from some parts of Liberia coming together with a shared interest in the medical field. The camp provided a unique opportunity to explore the medical field and consider it as a future career.

One of the best parts was participating in critical thinking games. These activities encouraged team work and helped us brainstorm and share ideas in creative ways. We also went on field trips that allowed us to explore different regions of Liberia, which was both educational and fun.

The connections I made and the things I learned have left me excited for one year. I’m looking forward to building on this experience, learning more, and meeting new people which share the same passion of medicine . The entire experience has left me eagerly anticipating next year.

Free Verse

My name is Princess Robertson, from Harper City in Maryland County, a student at J.S. Pratt United Methodist High School, now a 12th-grade camper at Camp xSEL 2023-2024.

For two years, this camp has been my sanctuary, a place where a young girl, passionate about science, finds my voice and learns to dream boldly.

Camp xSEL taught me to make decisions, decisions that shape my life goals, and build confidence like a bridge to my future.

I want to be a midwife, driven by the desire to save lives, and this camp has fueled that fire within me.

Here, I’ve met friends from across the country, friends who taught me the value of connection, of networking, of sharing dreams and struggles alike.

Critical thinking became my compass,

guiding me through the maze of life and science,

showing me the power of careful consideration,

especially in mathematics, where every answer count.

When I first arrived at Camp xSEL, I was nervous,

unsure of what lay ahead, surrounded by strangers who quickly became family.

Leaving them was the hardest part, saying goodbye with tears in my eyes, knowing I would miss them, and still, I miss them now.

At Camp xSEL, Maryland, here I stand, Michael Jurry, a camper, hand in hand, With memories of 2023 so bright, A journey filled with pure delight.

It started in July, a Saturday morn’, Called to the Ministry, both puzzled and torn. My principal sent me, with questions unclear,
I rushed to the office, holding back fear.

Faces unfamiliar, my heart raced fast, But a test awaited, and I was up to the task. I passed the exam, interview too,
Told I’d attend camp—oh, the joy that grew!

From my county to Monrovia, I took flight, My first time soaring, a thrilling sight. Excited and scared, all at once it seemed,
But every moment was more than I dreamed.
At Baptist Seminary, students gathered 'round,

From Liberia’s counties, connections profound. New friends were made, brothers and sisters true, We learned in the sciences, expanding our view. Guest speakers shared wisdom, the health field they praised, Encouraging us to join, in awe we were raised.
For the first time, I stepped in a lab so grand, Microscopes, anatomy, biochemistry at hand.

Experiments hands-on, with science we played,  Discoveries new, in the lab we stayed. Three meals a day, balanced and fine, Healthier, stronger, I felt so divine. From 2023 to this year’s stay,

Camp xSEL has shaped me in every way. The journey continues, I’m proud to share, A camper’s life, beyond compare.

Spotlight

"It was my first time engaging with Camp xSEL through the Maryland Camp. Although my initial reaction was mixed, I quickly realized that when young people are provided with the right materials and tools, they produce outstanding results. The critical thinking activities were not only journey down memory lane but also an excellent way to connect with the students outside of MEL."
